Gallipoli re-enactment

James Ladbrook, Jacky Mo and Jake Hoftshadt of year 9 report on year 9's incursion centring on

Gallipoli and the Anzacs of World War I:

We excitedly began the incursion by crawling into a trench simulation to get into the hall, whilst bomb sound effects were booming throughout the area. As the lot of us finally crawled through and got seated, we were introduced to four main actors who played – a junior soldier, a corporal, a Company Sergeant Major (CSM) and a nurse.  Through these four roles, we learnt what it might have been like to be in these positions, as we ourselves were able to participate in the show's production as extras.

Learning about the context in which the Gallipoli landing began and why the Gallipoli Peninsula was so important for the Allies. We were bombarded with the sounds of falling shells and artillery.  We learnt about facts and figures of the Anzacs and many other details. The incursion was suitably prepared for our Year group because it used examples to explain how each role in the war worked, and also due to the informative nature and images of Gallipoli. We were able to empathise with the roles of the actors, especially with the nurse who loses a brother in Gallipoli.

Overall, this incursion was quite interesting and we are sure that the Year 9 students learnt much from it. The actors performed their roles well, and the storytellers offered many examples related to the horrific and sad nature of war. In the very end, we faced the west and listened to the last post and Australian National Anthem, which created a sense of somber patriotism. This incursion was also fitting because it is now the 100th year anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign
