Vale Tom Uren

It is with sadness that we recognise the passing of Tom Uren, distinguished alumnus of Manly High School, who died at age 93 on 26 January, 2015.

Mr Uren was renowned as a strong political leader for over 40 years, often fighting for social justice. He was the Federal Member for Reid (in Sydney's inner west) from 1958 until 1990 and rose through the ranks of the Labour Party to become Deputy Leader from 1995 until 1997.

Mr Uren spent his early life in Sydney's inner west before his family moved to Harbord when he was five. "He walked barefooted to the local primary school, before being made to wear shoes to Manly Intermediate High." Sydney Morning Herald. Mr Uren's early life was spent as a sportsman before he joined the Army, being deployed to Timor. He was captured by the Japanese and spent his 21st birthday and two subsequent birthdays working on the Burma-Siam railway alongside ‘Weary' Dunlop.
