Is everything better than it used to be?

The Science Techno Museum is part of Australian National Science Week with support from the Australian Science and Mathematics School. This year the students' topic was, "Is everything better than it used to be?"

The project asked students to choose an item or process we use today and track the improvements or changes in technology over time. Students created a museum display which tracked the science behind the technology, its social impact and changes over time. Students presented these displays at their own campus and then finalists were picked for the expo at NBSC Cromer Campus.

Riannon Marshall-Witte and Milly Joyce (Year 8) wrote:

"Four weeks was used brainstorming ideas, researching technologies and making models all in lead up to the presentation of our displays.  With cameras, weapons of mass destruction, x-rays, food preservatives and music recording being some of the many ideas that we had thought of, year 8 had proved that we are capable of inventing upgrades to the various technologies presented.

Now came the time when year 9, 10 and various teachers had to score our displays. With models of planes and trains, taste tests of lollies, capers, biltong and toast, videos of genetics, samples of x-rays and many more, the decision was exceptionally hard.

In the end 6 teams were chosen to go compete at Cromer Campus against the other campuses in the Northern Beaches Secondary Collage area and from there, People's Choice and Outstanding Achievement awards were received."

Riannon and Milly's team were fortunate enough to be presented with the People's Choice Award.
